Only E-Z pass on PA Turnpike

Harrisburg – Say goodbye to your change as it will be replaced by E-Z Pass every time you pass by Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The 76 toll plazas and toll collectors along Pennsylvania’s 545-mile Turnpike will become an all-electronic tolling system as planned by the Turnpike Commission.

Turnpike spokesperson Carl DeFebo said that converting the Turnpike to an all-electronic system by 2018 is on the table.

Every time a car with an E-ZPass transponder passes, the toll is subtracted from the user’s pre-paid account. Driver without E-ZPass will have their license plate information captured by a camera and amount of the bill is send by post to the vehicle’s registered owner.

Between now and the time that they will have all-electronic tolling system is in place, the commission plans a marketing campaign. It is designed to increase E-ZPass use to as much as 85% of all turnpike travelers. At present, only about 70% of travelers are using E-Z Pass.

This is the most economical way for electronic tolling is much cheaper for the turnpike to operate.  Only 20 cents is deducted from E-ZPass per transaction; compared to $1paid for cash transaction. Since 2000 when E-ZPass was used, they hired fewer toll workers plus the speed and safety of the system.

According to DeFebo, the agency is developing plans to guarantee non-E-ZPass users pay up including the suspending vehicle registration as penalty for current tolls though this the passage of a new law.

There are more than 30,000 to 40,000 motorists passing through an E-ZPass without any transponder every month, as per agency figures.

By the utilization of an electronic tolling, users of E-ZPass would be paying lower tolls; the same way as E-ZPass is much cheaper than paying in cash. But a payment for the up-front cost would be about $10, with  $35 initial fee to be used as a declining balance for toll fare plus a $3 annual fee.

Spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic Jenny Robinson said their organization approves the use of cashless tolling for it alleviates the flow of traffic. This ultimately insures more road safety, speedier trips and economical use of fuel. AAA already is an avid supporter of E-Z Pass and in fact is selling transponders at its stores and encouraging users of the toll benefits.

It is important to warrant a system that provides fairness to out-of-state drivers who do not possess an E-ZPass, or they might be subject to a fine.

Robinson said that the establishment of a nationwide methodology ensures that users who are occasionally using their pass, as well as out-of-town motorists have a device in place in the payment of appropriate toll. They can utilize toll facilities they without being risk to a fine.

Eno Transportation president Joshua Schank said all-electronic tolling is technology that is not only beneficial but thoroughly tested. It is a measure that generates more revenues. It is also beneficial to the motorists as the tools are tailored to the demands required in the highway at certain times.

Schank said the transformation toward all-electronic tolling will be the trend in the years to come become as governments seek innovative means to search for infrastructure.
